The good, the bad and the curious of Yuletide music.
published December 24, 2023
And so the 2023 Advent Calendar is brought to a close with the great Doris Day and her rendition of Christmas Story. The song was written by one Pauline Walsh, about whom very little seems to be known, at least at first online glance. The song appears to be almost as obscure: it was originally released as the B-side of Ms Day's 1950 version of Silver Bells, and then again as an A-side the following year, both times without becoming a hit. Sounds to me like the languorous Christmas Story, complete with The Norman Luboff Choir's almost-OTT backing, had all the ingredients to be a Christmas music perennial, but that doesn't seem to have happened. Go figure.
Thanks to everyone who has followed the Advent Calendar this year - I had fun putting it together and I hope you enjoyed listening to it all. Merry Christmas!
Listen to Christmas Story.
Or listen on Spotify, where I've created a playlist for this year's Advent Calendar.
The Spotify playlist for all the previous Advent Calendars is here. Note: The playlist is incomplete, as some of my calendar selections are just too obscure for Spotify.
Doris Day comes bearing Christmas gifts in this year's final Advent Calendar entry.
