The good, the bad and the curious of Yuletide music.

I can't remember Showaddywaddy making very much of a mark here in Sweden. They are nowhere to be seen in my Swedish chart books, except they had a few vote-based entries in the "Hot Pile" of radio programme Poporama. Their most successful song there was Under The Moon Of Love. Their home country of Great Britain was another story: between 1974 and 1978 they enjoyed 10 Top Five hits, including a number one with Under The Moon Of Love, which is not bad going. Never the critics' darlings, they based their career mainly on reviving rock'n'roll hits from the late 1950s and early 1960s, which was not how you built credibility in the 1970s.
Hey Mister Christmas - an original song written by the band members - was issued in 1974, reached number 13 in the UK, and, on the face of it, has all the ingredients to become one of those Christmas perennials from the 1970s that keep being played year after year. Alas, this does not seem to have happened. Maybe they were trying too hard. I find it quite catchy, although the children singing on it have a problem hitting the high notes.
Listen to Hey Mister Christmas.
Or listen on Spotify, where I've created a playlist for this year's Advent Calendar.
The Spotify playlist for all the previous Advent Calendars is here. Note: The playlist is incomplete, as some of my calendar selections are just too obscure for Spotify.
Showaddywaddy's Christmas single doesn't seem to have become a perennial (German sleeve pictured here).
