Signing completed, shipping begun...

Published March 30, 2017

Today, after three intense days of signing well over 1,000 books, I finally completed that monumental task. Contrary to expectations, my signing hand is in good shape despite the strain its been under, thanks for asking.

Parallel with the signing, the capable staff of CPI (the printers who produced the book) in Melksham, UK have been busy packing and shipping the books. Shipping actually started Tuesday and Wednesday with orders outside Europe, then went on to Europe yesterday and today, when shipping also started for UK orders, which will complete tomorrow. Not each and every book will be shipped in this geographical order, because of special requirements for some orders, but generally speaking this means that the "time gap" between delivery of orders in the UK and orders in Europe and outside Europe will be a little less wide.

The fact that the book now exists as a physical artefact still feels a little unreal to me, so it will be a while before it sinks in properly. Until then, I hope it will feel real enough for you when receive it - and, of course, that you will enjoy it.

ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions: it now exists as a physical object

Published March 26, 2017

I have to admit it does feel a little unreal, but these pics (see below) just came in from CPI, who prints the revised and expanded edition of ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions in the UK. The images show the pages being bound and assembled, and then final product - the actual book!

Writing a book is such intense work so the fact that it will eventually end up as a physical object always remains abstract for me until I see it with my own eyes, not least for a book project that has taken as long as this one has.

Well, next week will be spent signing and preparing the shipping of all pre-ordered books on location in the UK, which is going to be an interesting experience. The books will then start shipping towards the end of the week, on Friday 31 March.

Although the deadline for ordering a signed copy of ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions has passed, you can still order the book, and if you're quick about it I may be able to have it shipped together with the other pre-ordered books.

Thank you!

More than two years in the making, the revised and expanded edition of ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions will soon be published, as all pre-ordered copies are expected to ship 31 March. It's been quite a journey, that's for sure. Except for a handful of days off here and there, I've been working seven days a week for two years, so I'm looking forward to a little time off in April. At the moment I'm busy preparing everything for the signing and shipping of the books next week.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who's joined me on this adventure, my first self-published book. The enthusiasm, kindness, generosity and support that I've experienced as I've worked on the book have been quite extraordinary, far surpassing any of my expectations. It's truly heartwarming to see that people are capable of such gestures of kindness and unselfishness in this ghastly world. So to everyone who's ordered the book, and/or helped out with information, supplied cuttings (some have even donated items from their collections), or just cheered me on: thank you so much! My heartfelt thanks also go the owners and members of various ABBA Facebook groups who have shown a lot of patience with my many posts about the book. The opportunity to remind fans about the project regularly has been a great help in making ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions a reality.

In other news, the ebook version of the book will be delivered on 6 April if all goes to plan. More details will follow.

If you haven't done so yet, you can still order the book at abbathecompleterecordingsessions.com

And last but not least: Thank you again!

A new, exclusive excerpt from the revised and expanded edition of ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions has just been published by ABBAtalk. It's about the recording of the Super Trouper album's 'On And On And On', and serves as an example of the kind of insight you can expect from the book. Read the excerpt here.

A few days ago, icethesite.com also published an excerpt from ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions, about Björn and Benny's songwriting methods, available here.

Behind the scenes where ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions was written

Here's a video put together by Chris Williams of ABBAtalk, which takes you behind the scenes in my office where I keep all my ABBA cuttings (or rather photocopies of cuttings) and Word documents chock-full of ABBA info. This is where the revised and expanded edition of ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions came to life.

ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions: it's got essays and features

Published March 01, 2017

Apart from all the facts and stories about ABBA's songs, the revised and expanded edition of ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions also contains a number of essays and features about various related subjects. For instance, as mentioned in a previous blog, there are five lengthy essays that will trace the making of an ABBA song from Björn and Benny writing the tune, over Agnetha and Frida recording the vocals, and then up to the mixing.

But there are also a number of mini-features on the recording studios most frequently used by ABBA; on the most important of the electronic keyboards Benny played; and, of course, on the session musicians who played on the majority of the recordings. For instance, there is a 4,000 word essay about ABBA's very own Polar Music Studio, the story of which is quite a bit more convoluted and intriguing than I was previously aware. Until Polar Studio's Lennart Östlund publishes his own book, my essay will probably be the most detailed account you will read about how this studio came to be and what happened to it.

Lots to learn and enjoy across the 448 pages of ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions, in other words!
